A keyboard shortcut is one way of invoking a function in Mac OS X simply by typing a combination of keys on the keyboard.
Using a keyboard shortcut or combination key, press the modifier key together with the character key. For example, typing Command (Cmd) key with the symbol with the C key at the same time copies whatever text or document that is highlighted or selected, be it text or graphic. This is also called the Command-C shortcut or combination.

Type the key or key combination until the resulting function appears. For example, hold Option as you startup the computer until Startup Manager emerges or press Shift until Safety Boot comes out.
If startup function doesn’t appear or work, try using the third-party keyboard by connecting to an Apple keyboard before you try it again.
